Today, I managed to get this fortune cookie when I was browsing Slashdot:

There are no threads in a.b.p.erotica, so there’s no gain in using a threaded news reader.
(Unknown source)

A bit of unknown wisdom from 1980s or 1990s.

And here we are, in 2010s, and when I saw this fortune cookie, I suddenly realised why a lot of commenting systems suck. I hate the fact that YouTube’s commenting system is outright primitive. (Remember, Google has a non-sucky comment platform in Google Groups and GMail.) But really, do people come to YouTube for comments? …and why wouldn’t they come to YouTube for discussions, if the commenting technology wouldnt suck? People did talk in Usenet, and made use of threaded news readers.
